Setting a new record, Jesse Owens wins the 200-meter in 21 seconds flat on the last day of the Olympic trials at the municipal Triborough Stadium on Randalls Island. Born a sharecropper's son on Sept. 12 in Danville, Ala., Owens moved with his family to Columbus, Ohio, when he was seven. By the age of 12, he had developed into a promising runner and attracted the attention of the high school track coach by running the 100-yard dash in 10 seconds flat. Owens set national records in track, tying one world record and breaking three others in the 1935 Big Ten Track and Field Championships. He won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics, angering Adolf Hitler, who left the stadium. Owens returned to the U.S. A hero, but found it hard to make a living because of racial discrimination. Forty years later, he was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Gerald Ford. Two years after that, Jimmy Carter honored him with a Living Legend Award. A longtime cigarette smoker, Owens developed inoperable lung cancer and died on March 31, 1980. He was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal.
