From left: Aura Nidia Espinosa Claudia Carera Mendoza and Claudia's mother, Alejandra Mendoza, 20 are photographed on July 30, 2009 in Leon Province, Nicaragua. They live the remote farming community of San Pedro, in the Jicaral municipality of Leon province. Aura Nidia was trained by Save the Children in 2006 to serve the community as a brigadista, or volunteer health worker. Two years ago, while her mother was away working in another country, Claudia nearly died from a severe case of pneumonia. She was vomiting, having convulsions and had a fever and bloody diarrhea. An aunt carried Claudia to the home of Aura Nidia. Aura Nidia had never seen such a sick child before, and she says she was a little bit afraid, but she remembered her training and stayed calm. She consulted her diagnostic materials and knew immediately that Claudia was in grave danger. She told Claudia's aunt that she needed to go to the hospital right away. The aunt took Claudia to the nearest official health post and based on Aura Nidia's referral an ambulance came to take Claudia to the nearest hospital, more than 50 miles away in the city of Leon.
